Welcome to my (now finished) journal about daily life in Japan (and elsewhere.)

In April and May of 2002 I travelled around Japan for a long holiday – my first overseas holiday.

And then, from the 13th of February, 2003 I lived in Fukuoka city, Kyushu. I taught at NOVA, FCC, ECC and the YMCA, and spent my days studying Japanese, sleeping, eating, hiking and reading books.

And in the end we took off at the end of August 2008 for 3 months or so of travelling around the world. You can read the original diary (with maps) at TravelPod – Turning left at Albuquerque.

And then, in December 2008, I returned (alone) to back to Australia to start my next phase in life.

Must come to an end.

So that’s it.

Out of Japan, back in Sydney. I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself. Each day just comes as it comes. I have a lot of down time at the moment, so I’m getting a lot of books read, and doing a lot of thinking. Going for a bush walk helps. But I’m not following up with the thinking and the reading. I have ideas that I’ve thought through, but nothing seems to come out of it.

One of the big problems I have is no money. It would help to have a job, but I can’t do anything yet about that.

Anyway, this is supposed to be about my time in Japan. But first, here’s a goanna.

Goanna

Goanna

So, anyway. I had fun in Japan. It made me look at life differently, especially now I’m just that bit older. So, that’s it.

After India, Bangkok is such a change. Although there are taxi drivers and touts wanting your business, it’s no where as agressive as it was in India. A polite, “no thanks” and that’s that. The food is good, the prices are good and the people are much better.

It’s nice to relax and not worry about things, at a least for a day or two. Sit down, relax, have some yummy food and coffee.
